US president Barack Obama, members of his cabinet and state governors are due to meet today and discuss new biofuels strategies in order for the US to leave behind its current habits of energy use.

Obama is encouraging the US to switch to greener fuels and reduce its reliance on imported oil.

In a bid to enhance biofuel production and prevail over posing challenges, a government report named ‘Growing America’s Fuel’ has been drawn up by the Biofuels Interagency Working Group (BIWG).

The BIWG is an organisation created by the president as a way to encourage new ventures in the biofuels industry and make the sector more ecologically aware. It was asked to develop a strategy to boost the generation of biofuel, increase biofuel investments, and the use of ‘flex fuel’ cars. These vehicles can run on both petrol and an ethanol mix.

Plans to meet these green goals include encouraging home grown biofuels, such as ethanol. Not only would this bring the strategies one step closer to reality, but would also create jobs in rural areas of the county at a time when thousands are facing redundancy and unemployment.

During this meeting other energy policies may be touched upon, including technology for capturing and storing carbon emissions.
